Our county's schools started the 2011-2012 school year today. Let us wish our students all possible success through the coming year.

We should do all we can to help our students. Become active in officially approved school support groups ((link...)). If you see a school that does not have an approved support group, then take steps to start one.

Encourage local teachers to register their needs at online charities that help individual classrooms, such as DonorsChoose.org ((link...)) and AdoptAClassroom.org ((link...)), then go ahead and donate to make sure they get the help their students need.

Here's a tip when using DonorsChoose.org: after you indicate the dollar value of your donation, click on the small "Edit" link to lower the percentage that goes to DonorsChoose, which is set to a high default of 15%. Lower it to 5% or even to zero to have more of your donation go to that particular classroom.

Necessary

Thanks for the reminder. It is so necessary that we support our schools. You don't need to have children or grandchildren in order to help. I often take time off work to go help out at the local elementary school. Not just supplies are needed, volunteers for reading, math and all subjects are needed.

You are so right when you say we all need to support our schools, not just the parents among us.

I often wish there were a safe, organized way, perhaps online, to match local students in need of tutoring to volunteer tutors for tutoring sessions, both virtual (online or phone) and face to face.

Does anyone know of such a matching service?
