My guess: Something that is a never-ending puzzle/contemplation????? (If I have to look up the meaning of a word,I would never use it! If I don't know what it means, none of my friends would either!)

Okay, I am completely going on the illustration, since I can't recall the meaning of the Latin word "vexilla"--but I'm going to say these folks are knot-tying types--?

That's a sheet bend knot, by the way, a great knot for tying two ropes of different diameters together and easy to untie when the tension is taken off. You boy scouts knew that, didn't you?
