Protesting on Roane Street. I'm sure some of the Hot Shots can provide the details.

I don't know what a Hot Shot is...

... and I don't know ay details...

But I DO know that somebody outside a hospital with "Shame on the Hospital" signs doesn't necessarily mean crap.

I do know for a fact that something very similar has been happening at UT Medical Center at least since June. People out on a street sitting under umbrellas and behind a sign so as not to be seen. The sign says "Shame on UT Med Center." What's it about? A new building under construction on the campus has a given general contractor. That general contractor - not the hospital - has a drywall subcontractor that is not unionized. So that's all the sign at UT is about. These protestors at UT show up at any hospital (they have also been to Fort Sanders and even hospitals in Atlanta). There is only one drywalal contractor in Knoxville that IS a union company, and whenever that company is not used for drywall, protestors show up with "Shame on ..." signs.

I don't know what is going on at RMC. But peope with signs like this don't necessarily mean crap.

So there may not be anything other than something like that for this sign to be up at RMC.

RB

Thanks.

There's a wild rumor that the ad man is going to be replaced. Thought that might be what it was all about

What is an ad man?

What is an ad man?

There are the same signs at

There are the same signs at ParkWest and MMC all Covenant hospitals. I think it has something to do with a bidding process, but I'm not sure.
I've been gone a while...good to be back.

Chelsea

Welcome back! :)

Good to have you back, Chelsea!

I do know that the Covenant hospitals - at least at one time - were being picketed by the same group that's at UT. And the deal was over choice of drywallers by subcontractors who had no contractual dealings with UT or Covenant. Don't know if what you report is same or different issue. It may be the same, since they are still at UT.

RB

RB - It appears it is all

RB -

It appears it is all related. I just read in the Oak Ridge Observer (letter from Conenant Health Admin) that the signs are being used by a labor union to protest the use of non-union drywallers. They are at several locations including hospitals and the YMCA (according to the article).

I think that's it, Mike

As far as I can tell that's precisely the deal. There's one union drywall shop in the region, and they're all pissed because the general contractors are choosing other drywallers.

RB

When I go by one of these signs...

I want to rolled my window down and shout, "About what?" The public has no idea was is, was, or will happen!

Mushy

When I go by, I feel a lot

When I go by, I feel a lot of disgust because they don't identify WHAT, if anything, Roane Medical has done and then you find or at least hear that, they are just part of a "round robin" union set up!

To me, it's just a ploy to get some publicity. I bet those two out there every day are being paid to sit there. They need to get a REAL JOB!!!

Picketeers

I have saw the picketeers go into the emergency room waiting room, use the restroom, pour them a cup of coffee and go back to their picket area.

I wonder how much money

I wonder how much money (paid from collected union dues) have been squandered on these sunbathers over the last two years!!!

Explain "the problem should be fixed"

What does that mean? The union has its legal rights, whether we like or not. Bottom line is that the hospitals being picketed, whether UT Medical Center or Covenant Health (which is why RMC is being picketed - as part of Covenant), what happened was that the hospital system did or is doing their construction does it via a General Contractor, which is absolutely normal procedure, given that hospital systems don't have their own construction departments. And laws regulate when a GC has to be used versus smaller contractors. What happened was the GC contracted with somebody the union didn't like (i.e. non-union workers). So the real beef is with the GC, but picketing in front of a GC's office draws no attention.

There is no "fixing" this problem unless someone can find a legal way to enjoin the picketers from being there. And I hope nobody holds their breath waiting for such a thing to happen.

RB

What we need is a big

What we need is a big tractor trailer to park in front of the picketers location everyday!!! (Just for meanness, of course!!!)

We Should Be Thankful we have Jobs

?

Hmm..

Well in that regard, look who solicits corporations and the ultra rich during political season. I hope you will take a minute and realize that your post is an argument FOR unions and not against.

I think some troops make

I think some troops make more than they are worth but I don't denigrate the vast majority of them who work their asses off for their Country. I honor and thank them.
