I have heard that TVA is apprasing ALL property on Swan Pond Rd. That they are planning to buy all the property and homes there, has anyone else heard about this? Are they going to buy everything from Roane State Highway to the railroad track, and on around to Swan Pond Circle? Have any offers been made...I don't want to know what the offer is, just if they have been made.

My parents live right behind
My parents live right behind the Swan Pond Baptist church and they have been appraised and a offer made. Everyone that I know from Brian Mullins to the Rail Road tracks have been appraised even the church. And let me tell you the offers that are being made are very very low! It is important to note here that the TVA approached all these land owners and made the offer they did not approach the TVA. But to say the least the offers have been slaps in the face.

What happened to 2-3 times
What happened to 2-3 times the appraised value they were talking about and appear to have given early on to some Swan Pond Cir. residents? I doubt if very many people could replace their existing home with an equal one for the appraised value. Has anyone accepted the offer? The community needs to stick together on this one.
Well there has been no 2 to
Well there has been no 2 to 3 time the appraisals on Swan Pond Rd at all. It is your appraisal plus 25% to settle out. Most of these people have lived there all their lives. And have mortgages. So economics 101 tells you with the low ball offers and the week attempt to compensate the people would not even have enough to put them into anything close to what these people have now. If it is even enough for them to buy a new home. It is also important to The TVA is making people sign away any future medical clams and the claims of any of their decedents. And there is also a clause in there that states you agree the TVA was not at fault in anything that happened on Dec. 22nd Yes they do need to stick together. I also think it is important to remember Mr. Kilgore’s statement of we want to make people whole again and work with them. Well a offer take it or leave it is not working with no one. Also my parents home and several others on Swan Pond have tested positive for fly ash in their homes . And the TVA will not even respond to them. I have picture of the dust problems in their homes if you would like to see them email me and I will get them to you.

Someone "in the know" told
Someone "in the know" told me that it was fair market value "before the ash" plus 30% then that figure was multiplied by another 30% for relocation cost and expenses. Maybe that is the formula for those who live closest to the spill but that was the case for the ones they knew of.
It may be different from
It may be different from area to area. But the contract I am looking at is only 25% above appraisal. I have learned that everyone has gotton a diffrent deal from the TVA. What you heard may be true.

I got the pictures!!! When
I got the pictures!!! When were these taken? Is the filter still like that? This puts a whole new perspective on the issue for me.
The filter becomes that
The filter becomes that dirty after about a week to week and a half. You can wipe the counters down in the morning and they need it again by
bedtime. It has been independently tested and it does have fly ash in it.
Anyone is welcome to come to my parents home to see if they would like.

Randy..
I am going to present this and other outrages at the meeting tomorrow. I do hope that our illustrious TVA officials are present, because they will not like what I say, or how I say it. You see, this is the area that has been discussed for storing the ash. It is the same idea that some of us presented to TVA over a month ago. It seems as though they think it's a gesture of faith to make an offer. But, we do not have any faith in TVA. And, this makes it even worse. Your story is being told all over the nation and in other countries as I am writing this. There are blogs that go world wide carrying it. And, this is just the beginning. Other stories will be posted as soon as they come to us.
Let's face it. TVA has no heart. Oh, they want to be good stewards of the consumer. Hey Mr. Kilgore...how about being a good steward of PEOPLE. Or do you even realize there is a difference. You take a time when people are sick, disheartened, and feel hopeless then spit in their faces. One thing you forgot to realize. You are screwing around with families with generations of history to this area. And you are messing with good, honest, hard working people. So if you think you only had a small movement, think again. It just got a lot bigger....nation wide!
harrimanite...
The properties bought for those prices are ones that TVA hopes to turn around and sell a few years down the road. You see, researching all of their actions in other places shows the same pattern. They will try to "reclaim" the most expensive properties and try to make a profit. In the past, this hasn't worked out too well for them. Some of their deals are still being investigated.
Their imaginary line, or red and green zone, or whatever they want to call it next, changes as they see fit. Wonder what they will use next? Maybe if the sun shines in your back yard from noon til 3, they buy you out at a good price? Who knows?
Source?
... of information as to TVA intent to sell these properties a few years down the road?
RB
TVA historically over
TVA historically over purchases property for various projects. They get it at fire sale prices. Then when the lake, dam etc is built and the area is booming they sell the excess property to developers and TVA and the developer make the money. I have always felt that the original property owners or their heirs should be given the opportunity to repurchase the property at the same price they got for it in the sale. Just my opinion.
I really hope they plan to
I really hope they plan to sell these properties. if I had the power I would suggest that TVA buy every property anybody wanted to sell in a 5 mile radius (or something). Then it would be in TVA's financial viewshed that they have to do a good job of remediation in order to get good value for their holdings. It would encourage them as a corporate entity and be in their bottom line best interests to make Roane County whole. That is exactly what I want them to do.
are you also aware that they
are you also aware that they "move" graveyards?
They have in the past I think during the time they were building dams... but when I looked at some of the info..... next to some names it stated "not moved"....
I wonder what is going to happen to the graveyard on Swan Pond Road.....
But Randy,
Now they are devaluing the property in their appraisals. Let's see. TVA appraisers come in and appraise your land. Then want to pay 25% above the devalued price even though it was their fault it has been devalued. That 25% doesn't even put the price back to the land's original worth before the disaster. And, it isn't land they can try to turn a profit on later down the road.
People Need to Band Together
People in this area need to band together and get away from TVA Coal Electricity. People need to convert everything in their homes to narural gas. If you have high cellings, put in solar panels. Farmer Leaf has all the information on how to do that. Farmer Leaf is the only one on here who knows what he is doing. My future home will have natural gas and solar panels in it. When I get ready for a new home, I will take some lessons from him. Even my daughter and her husband are looking into converting totally to natural gas and solar panels. She wants to do composting and grow organic foods. I am sooooo proud that she wants to do this.
I know that some people still think that the coal fire plants are going to be around for a long time. God may have something to say about that. The Myan Indians have in their records that December 21, 2012, something big and life changing will happen all over the world. The earth is changing its axis slowly to make the poles melt. It is looking like the Myan Indians could be right. Things will have to change on this earth, because we have polluted it to the point of causing everyone on this earth to be sick. We are producing more and more autistic children, having more and more respiratory problems, adhd is on the rise, cancer is on the rise and especially in the Oak Ridge/Knoxville/Kingston area, alsheimers disease is on the rise, etc. We are killing our own people because we want to have an easy life with the electricity produced by the TVA Coal fire Plant. How sad we all are. The only one that can change all this is GOD and he is staring us in the face right now with what he is about to do possibly in 2012.
We have turned off the televisions to my grandchildren and cut off the X-boxes and now they are playing outside, using no electricity. They are having a blast. They play card games with us and we interact more with each other.
TVA needs to GO AWAY SOME DAY. The community needs to take the bonuses back from Tom Kilgore and his engineer friends and their companies, and the TVA board and spread it among the community to help make up for what they have done to devalue the area. I would love to see this happen.
Thanks for the strokes,
but I wouldn't claim to be the only person on here who knows what he's doing.
I have made it my adult life's work (I'm 63) to design a sensible, low impact, sustainable way of living a healthy and rewarding life for our family.
We have designed our farm around sustainable, earth friendly practices, and feel that we are working with nature and not against it. It takes less money to live this way, creates a healthier lifestyle by reducing stress and dis-ease and allows us to have something worthwhile to share with the community if they should be so interested.

Yes to Famer Leaf
I love your way of life. I want to bring my daughter to your farm. Who else lives like you do around here. This way of living should be taught in our schools. The only problem is that it would not put money in the pockets of todays politicians and Coal Mining and Coal Fire Plant Exec. Farmer Leaf, I do believe that those people don't like people like you.
You are right
about not being liked by the power elite that controls the direction corporate America is heading us toward. Just the act of living simply with integrity and rejecting a materialistic lifestyle is perceived as a challenge to that authority. Sort of a "How dare you reject our master plan?"
Our country's history is replete with examples of people following their own moral drummer, from Henry David Thoreau, to the Abolitionists, the Suffragettes, the Farmer / Labor Movement, Civil Rights Movement, the Anti-Vietnam War Movement, and the current Environmental / Organic Food movement. What they all had in common was to break with the status-quo and to promote justice, peace, and equality as the foundation for improving life for all of humanity.

It Will All Come Together Someday
Farmer Leaf, my daughter read your emails and she thinks that you are a very intelligent person. Because of her going to your website, she is now wanting to plant an organic garden. She and her husband has decided that upgrades on their home will be solar, natural gas, and what ever it takes to use less electricity. Thank you so much for your website and emails to open their eyes to how we should live. I have tried and tried to tell them, but it was your website that did it.
I hope others will want to learn your natural way of living. Otherwise we will kill ourselves from pollutant toxins, because at the present time that is the way we are headed.
Has anyone heard this?
We have heard from someone "in the know", that people are actually deciding to stay in their homes at the spill site and not sell out to TVA? Has anyone else heard this? I can't imagine taking a chance on your life and staying there for any amount of money. I'm not judging anyone, but rather I'm really concerned. Some of these people have children and grandchildren. I would never take a chance on my children's health by bringing them up around that stuff. I know people have sentimental and emotional connections to their homes, but this is their health and lives we are talking about. TVA is trying to say there are no health risks, but TVA is out for TVA! Blessings to all involved.
The people that are deciding
The people that are deciding to stay it is not by their choice. I can speak for my family in saying that the TVA is not offering enough money now that someone could get out pay off their mortgages and buy another place. So no the majority of the people that are staying have no choice but to stay.

Thank you for the
Thank you for the explanation. I didn't know that people were staying for that reason. I thought they were choosing to stay just for sentimental reasons. I thought they were believing the fact that TVA was saying everything was safe and merely trying to point out that TVA is out for TVA and I wouldn't believe them when they say all is safe.
Marie - actually there are multiple reasons...
I don't doubt for a minute that what Randy reports to you is accurate. Randy is not a liar in my experience. And if Randy tells you that other people besides his family have told you the same thing, then I expect you can believe it.
Yet what you posit is true as well: There are people making the positiive choice not to leave for sentimental reasons as well as other reasons. I've heard some people say that they simply choose not to leave because they are not experiencing negative effects sufficient to make them want to leave or feel like they need to leave. It's a personal decision for every resident. Some people say the dust is no big deal to them, say they are seeing improvements made, saying they believe property values will rebound... simply making the choices to stay for a wide variety of reasons.
What I do NOT believe is the truth is that there is only ONE reason for making the decision either way.
RB
A few quick answers.
Farmer, some people don't want to sign any papers, because part of the take it or leave it deal is that the residents cannot come back any time in the future and claim anything to do with health issues. Then, that would leave them out of meeting the criteria for the contracted medical group, even if they got sick a week after selling their property. But, if it is safe as TVA has said over and over, then why have that waiver in the sales contract? ve Then, they have to sign a paper declaring that TVA was not negligent.
RB, I said they plan to sell because of their past history. They have done the same thing before. We find this information when we do hours of research. And yes, they are being investigated on some of their previous land deals.
Rick, I think you meant
to flag Marie on your above post. I am only on this thread because I was responding to personwhocares about comments she made concerning my lifestyle.
However, your succinct explanation of what TVA is requiring in terms of buyouts is most informative, and sad to say, all too familiar. In fifteen years of RiverKeeping, I too researched deeply into TVA's past behavior.
If one truly believes in the adage, the ends don't justify the means, then from this vantage point in time, TVA was flawed from the start. Ironic isn't it? the Cherokee had their Trail of Tears, forced on them by a compliant government doing the bidding of greedy, land hungry whites, only to have their descendants also forced from the land by that same government. Now the latest occupants of this land (Swan Pond area) are once again figuratively on the point of the bayonet.
History repeats itself in the best and worst ways, and this tragic event is unfolding in predictable fashion. This is the result of institutional conditioning unable to change course from past practices. It is all written down, documented, and a matter (sometimes with some prying) of public record. Yet how many want to hear it?
We once attempted in the early 1990's, to alert Kingston and Roane County about what was coming downstream from Oak Ridge, about what was already lacing the river bottom sediments, and the health risks associated with eating the catfish. We were not well received, - from anybody! It is of little consolation that we were right to have tried.
I wish I had some word of encouragement, some bit of wisdom, some gesture of kindness, to impart, to the people physically and emotionally made ill by the events of December 22nd, that would lighten their hearts. At best, all I can offer is my personal assurance that you are being heard by some in the community.
No struggle for justice is ever in vain.
Living and teaching Earth friendly sustainable agricultural practices.

Sorry farmer
I did mean to flag Marie. But, as it turns out, we all benftited from my mistake. Your post was one that needed to be read.
On a different subject; I wrote a paper in college about the Indian Removal Act. It was entitled "Germany had Hitler, We had President Jackson". I got an A, lol.
it's ashamed
it's ashamed people has to move because of something like this, this is there home, some has watched there children grow there, and now all they have are memories, something that could have been prevented .
