Follows the TNGOP playbook:

"There may be a need for a hearing ... but I don't want the hearings to turn into a circus where certain TVA bashers turn this into an opportunity to bash TVA and to bash coal," Rep. Wamp said.

This is gold on a platter for a Democratic candidate for governor with half a brain.

But he is right. What does

But he is right. What does a hearing that is hijacked by TVA-haters accomplish? Also what you quote doesn't say that there won't be hearings just that Wamp doesn't want to have hearings that don't accomplish anything beyond giving the TVA-haters a platform to bash. Doesn't sound like he is opposed to hearings at all but that he wants hearings that can be beneficial to the process. I'm not sure there's much fault to be found with that (well except that he has a "R" after his name).

R's Earned it

This is right out of the play book. Republicans need Coal money.

playbook schmaybook...

So what? Does that mean that the purpose of the hearing SHOULD be to provide a feeding frenzy for bashers?

Is that in the Democrat/Prgressive playbook?

RB

Shorter RB, "Go back inside your houses,"

"The authorities have everything under control. Your air and water are safe. There is nothing to fear."

Well, maybe, maybe not. We need to air it out and see for ourselves.

Look...The TNGOP is sucking up to bg coal and doesn't want anybody to be able to say bad things about a source of their money. Nobody has to bash coal...All we have to do is say, "Look at what coal has done to Roane County."

What you seem to think I am saying...

... is not what I said, WC.

I don't give a damn what comes out of whose playbook. Coming out of a playbook per se doesn't make something good or bad.

And I don't think you can see in what I typed that I don't want the hearings to be held, or that they shouldn't be held. I'm not that interested in the TNGOP or the TNDP either.

The facts need to be found and made public. Feeding/bashing frenzies don't contribute to that in a positive way.

RB

What I read into this is

What I read into this is that Republicans are hard at work manipulating public opinion, as usual, instead of working with everyone to deal with the problem and make everyone whole again. They are so afraid of losing control and power and their source of lobbyist money.

Nobody has proposed bashing anyone, by the way...It was Zach and the TNGOP who started talking about controlling the public hearings to keep bad things from beign said about Big Coal.

Yep...

...lots of people are hard at work manipulating public opinion and it ain't just Republicans. Do we disagree on that, WC?

WC, you an't dumb... I think you have sense enough to know that NOBODY has to PROPPOSE bashing for it to devlove into that.

The TVA

and coal fired steam plants are PUBLIC issues. I am not sure how hearings to conduct public business are to be considered a "circus". I for one am not concerned about the TVA or coal industries "hurt" feelings or image. They will be responsible for what ever image they create for themselves in the months and years ahead based on how they perform subsequent to this and other spills. If real change in operations and doing business is to result from this disaster, everything needs to be in the open and on the table. The temptation to water down or withhold information out of a fear of "hype or hysteria" is part of what fuels the conspiracy theories, it doesn't allay them.

Its Funny How...

Accountability, Liability, and Financial Responsibility morph into "Bashing" and "Feeding Frenzy" when partisan politics enter the forum. Its detestable what Zach Wamp said and a slap in the face of every property owner in the neighborhood. Lets take a walk through history RB and RV. TVA stole all of this land under the guise of our governments eminent domain playbook. TVA has been in the business for decades of selling this "Public" land for substantial profits to developers. The non-profit TVA grossed over $9 Billion in revenue, almost $400 Million in profit, and handed out almost $50 Million in bonuses to its CEO and Board of Directors in fiscal year 2007-08. TVA has ruthlessly contaminated the Tennessee Valley for decades. TVA knowingly has not been truthfull withs its ash disposal and emissions practices. TVA has now dumped over 1 Billion gallons or 5 Million cubic yards of hazardous contaminants into our lake such as barium, lead, arsenic, mercury, etc. And Zach Wamp is concerned about "TVA Bashing" and "Feeding Frenzies".....Give me a freaking break!!

Its not just Zack Wamp carrying TVA's water either. Mike Farmer, Ken Yager, Dennis Ferguson to name a few have all stated on record that there are no apparent harmful contaminants in the lake. I find that freaky that these guys are already circling the wagons for TVA just 10 short days since the ecological disaster.

I consider myself to be a staunch conservative but I recognize a GOP coverup when I see one.

For the record...it appears that the cold temperatures are still killing fish. TVA has been outside my house scooping up dead fish for two days with swimming pool nets. I don't feel the need to get my news from the City Council or County Gov. I can walk out onto my deck and get the news myself. By the way I am collecting quite an impressive photo database of these events.

C-Man

What species are you seeing dead? And can you check the gills to see if the gill structures are coated with ash?

I think the question we need answered is whether these are sediment kills or toxic kills.

Ah yes... TVA stole it...

Are you older than TVA, Crappieman? I'm not. I've lived with TVA's existence all my life. I'm sorry, but I'm not buying the notion that TVA was/is the "Great Satan". Born from FDR's need for innovation to make the New Deal work, TVA did what a lot of new progressive enterprises do. It moved people, changed their lives forever, etc, all in the name of progress.

So - whether TVA should have been born as it was or whether it should have been aborted like the fetus of the antichrist in the womb is rather a moot point, isn't it? Poor, poor, pitiful residents of the Tennessee Valley. We can't just turn them off, can we? What do we need to do to punish the TVA employees of the present for the sins of the FDR administration in creating the TVA?

Make TVA go away to pay for the sin of their existence. A real option?

Ignore the positives that TVA has brought to its service area? Not an option. If TVA hadn't come into being, the outsider-hating, change-hating indiviualists of the Appalachian Mountains in this area would still be living in the 30s.

Actually, what happens is that when political agendas enter into the process of what should be accountability the bashing and feeding frenzies begin. And the last time I looked, these distortions of the process of accountability can be morphed or perverted by the political machinations of either - or any - political group's agenda. Tain't just Republican politics that can do this. It's anybody's. Republicans say it's the Democrats. Democrats say it's the Republicans. Etc. Etc. But political partisanship is capable of doing the trick, no matter which direction the partisanship points.

TVA and Tellico Dam

Roanebooster,
TVA STOLE LAND from farmers in the 70's to build the Tellico dam. They CONDEMNED 32,000 acres for a 16,000 acre lake. The farmers got LESS THAN $1,000 per acre for their land. MOST DID NOT GET any additional money for their barns and homes. Two pieces of land - Rose and Carson Islands used to produce 5 times the national average for corn production.

Yes I agree TVA has done some good things, but they have done A LOT OF BAD THINGS. I feel sorry for everybody involved in the ashe spill. I hope and PRAY they will be treated more fairly then the Tellico Dam VICTIMS were! OH by the way, the land on Tellico is called Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, etc.

I was really surprised when

I was really surprised when I read that ... of the 300 acres that were involved in the ash spill, TVA owned all but 50 acres of it! I guess they bought up all the "wetlands" and surrounding acreage when the dams were built and the steam plant was planned.

I LOVE your screen name!

That's cool!
