Russia's case is considered singular in the developed world, yet there are swaths of rural America that are beginning to replicate it. Owsley County, Kentucky, has a life expectancy similar to that of Russia; from 1980 to 2014, the county's cancer death rate increased by 45.6 percent, the largest increase in the nation.
