You sir are correct. I would go so far as to say the greatest band of all time period.
According to legend, Duane assembled the core group for some jams in Jacksonville. When it all came together, Duane stood at the door and said anybody who wants out of this band will have to fight me to get through this door.
They needed a singer, so they summoned Gregg to come back from California. Duane told him they already had two guitar players, so he'd have to play keyboards.
