The Vernal Pool

Vernal pools are the source of life in East Tennessee. They form after winter rains and last until the trees leaf out and start drinking heavily.

Those black salamanders with the white dots that kids find under rotting wood begin life in vernal pools as do any number of other amphibians and macro invertebrates.

If you know where a vernal pool is...keep it to yourself.
