Got your attention? Wouldn't this be grand? Used Kayak central location for people stopping off the highway in route to Tennessee rivers, to tour from Harriman to SwanPond on the water, to cruise around all our area lakes and rivers.

Why? Well, I am seeking advice on what Kayak to buy, and it will likely be used unless I can find some reason to purchase new.

I have no clue about Kayaks but would love to know more. Do I need a seat which is contained within the kayak or on top, just what do I need with regard to a kayak.

With the recent triathlon events in Roane County, which are likely to grow, hopefully more Roane County (and surrounding area) residents will want to begin participating yet one cannot really buy what you need at WalMart.

Been to Knoxville four times and more confused than ever as it relates to Kayaks.

Ideas?

I'm gonna venture a guess here...

... that it would be a good idea to look at Dagger.

If in Harriman

When the great biking trail was developed near St Louis stretching for miles along the rivers heading west, many small towns began to prosper due to recreational activities.

Little dumpy storefronts became home to used / new bike shops, eateries, and a variety of other pubs, etc.

Harriman is sitting perfectly for such an enterprise.

Maybe Ellis Salvage will consider expansion...I certainly would be a shopper!

Kayaks

Much like the Forest Gump shrimp varieties, there are many kayak choices,
Dagger, Old Town, sit-above, sit in, racing, white water, recreational, varied skill levels..

Dagger?

Actually I don't push any particular brand, and since I no longer have a financial interest, I can be objective. I did recently work with Jackson Kayak on Sparta TN on a sit on top fishing kayak. Sit on tops (SOTs) are an excellent choice for warm weather boaters. They tend to be very stable and reasonably easy to handle. The downsides are that they are 20% heavier on average than a regular kayak and can be chilly in wet or cool weather.

As for regular sit inside kayaks, there are very good ones and very bad ones out there. Even Dick's and Gander mountain have a couple of models that are workable, though the bulk of their offerings are not on my recommend list. The problem with most stores these days is that they have salespeople who aren't knowledgeable. If you see one used that you are interested in, I would be happy to give you an assessment.

Recommendations

On Craigslist, there are several for sale, many Daggers and many are whitewater.

At Gander Mountain, I was totally freaked out by the options though I know I don't need "sea/ocean" while at Dick's I have no idea and no one to help.

Looking at online stores and just haven't a clue.

WC, if you don't mind, just tell me which direction to head and I will begin researching.

I would like to paddle during all seasons as we live right on the beautiful Emory.

Tks...

Swannie,

What is your budget?

Kayaks

We have two kayaks, sit-upons, that we enjoy very much, and we are definitely warm weather paddlers (of a certain age!) Rock Creek Outfitters Downunder in Chattanooga has a good selection and their personnel are quite knowledgeable, if you don't mind going that far. But Steve's the best for info, and he's not invested in selling you something--what a deal!
