Dear Representative Ferguson,

I’m writing this letter to urge your opposition to HB 2511, which could rightly be called the Whistleblower Payback Bill. This legislation would prevent state and local governments from investigating or enforcing an environmental infraction based on a tip from an anonymous source.

I notice that this bill would not outlaw anonymous tips on ... illegal drugs. Or gang activity. Or victimization of a child. Or anything else you'd care to name, Just corporate and environmental crimes.

Crime is crime, and if I’m not required to give my name when I call the police to provide a tip, those who blow the whistle on environmental crime should not have to provide their names and addresses in order for alleged crimes against the environment to be investigated.

These crimes harm not just our air, water, and land but also pose a threat to human health and safety. Roane County deserves protection against bad actors who would destroy our resources and our health for the sake of profit. The ability to make anonymous tips regarding these crimes is essential to protecting environmental whistleblowers from payback by polluters, and protecting the health and beauty of our bountiful natural resources.

I hope that you will do all you can to prevent this misguided bill from becoming the law in Tennessee.

Thank you for your consideration,

Roane County Citizens
(Ok, it's really just me, but you guys can send your own letter to Dennis.
