This headline "Temperance Town may relax restrictions on beer sales" in the Roane County NEWS makes it seem that all of Harriman is for relaxing current beer laws. It's simply not true!
Those members of current City Council that are NOT up for reelection presented this proposal to the beer board. Neither the mayor or the other council members (who did not have prior knowledge of the proposal) are for this proposal, and neither are event promoters like David Webb, Gary Baker, and others.
As a matter fact, David Webb said he would not put on the "Miss Polk Salad" pageant if beer is sold!
Several churches are up in arms, as well, and you can bet there will standing room only at next Tuesday's Council Meeting!
I have nothing against a good cold beer, but having it at public events with small children around is just asking for trouble.
There was a man arrested for public drunkenness at the Christmas Parade...imagine what it would be like if beer had been freely available.

I totally agree Mushy. As the director of Hooray for Harriman I will be present Tuesday night to speak against this proposed ordinance. These City sponsored family events are no place for sales of any type of alcohol.
There seems to be and attempt in the State Legislature to do this state wide for Counties and Cities. (link...)

Relaxing Beer regulations
Craney Creek
Is is really a question of whether or not to sell beer or is it a question of becoming a recreational destination just off the interstate ? Three cute tiny towns, all nestled next to a 39,000 acre lake...why would we want to treat our visitor's like adults and let them decide if they would like a cold beer ?
These folks on $25,000 Harley's and $100,000 '55T-birds are driving around looking for things to do...places to retire to...why don't we act like we all live next to a huge, beautiful lake? We litter our roads like we've got no sense. We should have manicured scenic driving trails, plainly marked, helping folks "discover' this beautiful county and the fun places to go ...maybe even events that let people have a cold beer while enjoying the towns around the lake. We should act like we are a happening place on the planet.
We actually do things to tear our image apart...as I type this I'm looking at a dead Coyote over to the right where it says "Around Roane"...a few minutes ago it was a picture of a TVA clean up crew in Hazmat suits.... taken in April 2009 ! What are we doing to ourselves ?!! I need a beer !
I just got a direct mail piece from Ken Yeager saying how hard he is working to create jobs. Why work hard to create jobs when destiny has given us a 39,000 acre lake and all we have to do is create ways to have good, clean, tolerant fun and our area will prosper.
Hooray for Harriman
Politics, Drugs, and Greed – The dictionary describes alcohol as strong drink, intoxicant, spirit, mind-altering. It also describes intoxicant as something that causes physical and mental control to diminish. So is alcohol a drug? To me it is because it alters the mind. Alcohol is treated differently than other drugs because it is legal, it is easily accessible, and it is pushed on consumers through advertising.
Dr. Bennett and the Roane Medical Emergency Room Manager spoke on drugs at a Drug-Free Kingston meeting, and both talked about alcohol and how most illegal drug users start with alcohol first. So do we really want a drug-free city?
By saying that alcohol sales will help the financial/public relations problems is like saying “do whatever” for money. Do you really want our city to proposer if we can not be a family-oriented city? Alcohol destroys families and causes physical ailments. If we are true Christian believers, we should not cause others to stumble or make drugs easy for them to obtain. We all sin enough.
I know alcohol is a personal choice, but do we really need a stimulant to enjoy the abundant life that God has given us?
Ummm, actually....
Are you arguing against coffee and chocolate? What about cokes? Those are stimulants. Alcohol is a mild depressant. Some people can't handle chocolate. Should it be banned for the rest of us?
I personally feel that the abundant life we have been given includes chocolate, coffee, and several other things that we have to learn to enjoy in moderation.
Alcohol
I respect your opinion which I hope you respect mine. Maybe "stimulant" is not the right word. I may be mistaken (I have been at least once) but I have never known cokes or chocolate make someone act different (affect their mind) with slurred voices, etc. I have never know them to put other people's lives in danger - but maybe they could. I have never know them to be banned from children and young people (except by parents) - but maybe they have been. My opinion is that alcohol is a drug - just legal.
The term is not the point
I agree with most of what you say but I think it misses the point. The problem is not alcohol or chocolate. It is the abuse of same. I accept the need for laws against drunkeness in any arena that puts the public at discomfort or danger. I don't agree with laws against alcohol for the reason that some irresponsible people might become agents of public discomfort or danger. Most of the world has no problem with responsible public consumption. Why should we?
Sometimes we tend to get a little carried away with this stuff!
Mushy, 99% of the time I agree with your posts! You are a positive contributor with great community spirit, but I disagree with you on this one. Whether beer is made available for sale or not, there are always drunks who will show up for public events and bring their own or buy it on the site. Does that mean we should make the rules based upon a few abusers?
Prohibition proved that didn't work. I don't live in Harriman, but Kingston wrestles with this issue over the 4th of July events held here. Like Harriman, Kingston needs every penny of revenue it can get and events like these can generate lots of it. For instance, if Budweiser were allowed to put up a single beer pavilion, they would give 60-70% of the profits to the city in addition to sponsoring a World Class Hydroplane event that would draw huge crowds from multiple states. They get great advertising, local merchants make lots of $$, the City gets $$ and publicity. And yes, some additional enforcement would be needed to make sure troublemakers were dealt with.
I have the utmost respect for our churches, but they get a free ride as it is and are not empowered to write the rules for the entire community.
My main concern about this is how it was undertaken
...had it been brought up to the council before going to the beer board, I would have gone along with the consensus of the majority vote. Just seems a little under-handed to me.
Mushy
I agree with Mushy. Why
I agree with Mushy. Why should a big group of people be subjected to a small number of people who feel they can't enjoy themselves without a drink in their hand.
Big Group?
Or a small group making rules that suit themselves? I have never felt "subjected" to anything at events where beer is served.
That's what I meant... a
That's what I meant... a large group of non-drinkers and children having to put up with a small group of imbibers.
Well, if anyone wanted a
Well, if anyone wanted a beer, all they would have to do is go to Big John's or any other local convenient store and purchase one. I have no preference either way, because I do not drink. But, what would be the difference if they bought it at from a vendor or a local store? The only way you can keep it away entirely is to make the event alcohol free by law. And even then, you would have to go around smelling what was in peoples' cups. They will still buy it at the local store, then pour it into cups. So, make the event alcohol free by law, and enforce it, or allow the vendors and make money for the city.
I understand Mushy's concern...
... about the process.
Neither Mushy nor I are in the classification of "teetotalers." :-) And if I understand Mushy aright, it's not so much about the possibility of having such events, it's more about the way the process was handled.
And I understand randmart regarding being "subjected" to things.
Fact of the matter is that at such large public gatherings one can be subjected to an obnoxiously intoxicated individual whether or not beer is available as part of the event. I've seen it hundreds of times at places where beer or other alcoholic drink was not part of the event, and it does nothing to prevent the folks who think it's a "good time" to get snockered and stumble around in public breathing on people and generally acting a fool.
And whether alcohol is served with the event or not, the result should be the same - the offender either leaves immediately when asked to (not driving!) OR there's a trip to the local constabulary and a stay in the "Cross Bars Hotel."
Y'know - it's kinda like saying having a sign up procaiming a "gun free zone" will prevent a deliberate action on the part of a criminal in bringing a gun into the zone. It's purely wishful thinking.
I don't wanna be - nor do I want my family or friends to be - accosted by some drunk at a function in downtown Harriman, or Kingston, or you name it. But it happens - and has historically happened, and will continue to happen whether there is an official ban on the product or not.
IMHO a big part of it is our culture, in which we've been brought up to be titillated by the idea of drinking in public. In other cultures, e.g. Germany, where beer gardens are commonplace and in fact de rigeur, it's not near as much of an issue.
Relative to the above paragraph, we in our neck of the woods need to grow up a little bit and act a bit more like mature citizens of the world.
necessarily think "family" or "family event" and beer are necessarily mutually exclusive. Beer is not per se an "anti-family" thing.
RB
Nobody enjoys....
being subjected to or accosted by drunks, but that possibility exists whenever you go out in public. Does that possibility go up if beer is being served? Most likely! But the vast majority of people do not get drunk (or obnoxious) just because it's available. We do indeed need to grow up,and maybe that's what it's all about!
PS.....Randy Ellis also put this up on his Facebook page and the comments are interesting.
I respect everyone’s
I respect everyone’s opinion and the debate on this subject. There are several aspects to the debate religious, liability etc…. But what makes this a great Country is we are all allowed to have our opinions on subjects. So I encourage everyone here that lives in the City of Harriman to call their Councilman or attend the meeting Tuesday to express their opinion. For me I choose not to subject my son or family to something I feel is wrong some may not feel it is wrong and I respect your beliefs also. We will just have to see how it pans out Tuesday night

I can certainly understand where you're coming from...
And as you say, discussing things like this and maintaining mutual respect is what a civil society is all about. I appreciate and understand the remarks everybody has made here in response to this posting so far.
You're right - it may all go away Tuesday night anyway :-)

Let the voters decide just like they did with liquor stores and liquor by the drink... People need to quit looking at an issue and acting like they have found their holy Grail to get their names out. I'm sick of RoCo politicians doing anything to be mentioned in the paper or on a news website.. Let the people decide... -Brian
