The Clinch River starts in Virginia and ends in Kingston. Along the way it gets mistreated, mainly by one of the most stupid and self destructive paractices humans are involved with...coal mining.

The Powell River parallels and then joins the Clinch and is undergoing intensive research as a biological hotspot. Here's part of the press release that spells good news for these two Tennessee treasures. I'll never understand why it is OK to foul a pristine river just so someone can make money.

Nashville, Tenn. - Department of Environment and Conservation
Commissioner Jim Fyke and Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan announced today
the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the preservation and
restoration of the Clinch and Powell rivers by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency Regions III and IV; the Virginia Department of
Environmental Quality; the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and
Energy; and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
