Mary Travers of Peter, Paul, and Mary passed away yesterday. Here's just one reason I loved her and them. As a teenaged boy facing the draft during the Viet Nam years, this song highlights the fruitlessness of war. Nobody wins.

More

Seems like it always comes in three's.

Patrick Swayze, Mary Travers, and Henry Gibson of "Laugh In"; all wonderful entertainers.

Oh MAN!!!

I hadn't heard about Henry Gibson. He was also rich as the contrary judge on Boston Legal. ALWAYS liked Henry.

I Always Loved PP&M

Was in love with Mary several times in my youth.

They brought much to several generations. Now she and Puff can frolic in the autumn mist.

Hey Booster, did you hear

Hey Booster, did you hear the urban legend (or whatever you call it) that Puff, the Magic Dragon was secretly about "puffing the weed"?

Oh yeah -

I lived through all that. Remember it well. I remember that Peter or Paul (forgot which one) essentially said you could screw up any song lyrics by adding your own meanings if you wanted to. They never paid much attention to it.

BTW - another loss this week: Henry Gibson.

I know what you mean... They

I know what you mean... They had everyone believing that the classic "Louie, Louie" was a dirty (lyrics)song, when in fact it was completely innocent!

Oh how that brings back memories of the Legion Hall on Saturday nights back in the 60s!

Facing the draft

I loved this song and still do. I was a teenaged girl who thought she too was facing the draft. Who would have ever guessed that the Equal Rights Amendment wouldn't pass right away? I was so sure it would. :( The ERA was so obviously the Right Thing to Do.

My male friends all had their draft numbers from the lottery. They all had student exemptions, but the threat of a change in status to 1A was always looming.

Mary's clear, strong voice in this song was with all of us throughout those war-ridden times. It is a good song for these war-ridden times, too. As Whitescreek noted of war, "Nobody wins."

Rest in peace, Mary Travers, and thanks for all the music.

The very first album I ever

The very first album I ever bought in my life was Peter, Paul & Mary. I was about 9 years old living in Albequerque. Even Stewball held meaning to me then.

When I was in high school here in Tn, my best freind wasn't familiar with PP&M.

Showtime aired PP&M's reunion concert. My best friend and I sat in the floor and watched intently, with tears rolling down our cheeks.

During the concert PP&M addressed the "Puff" rumors. In good spirit they sang their rendition of a great American tune...Oh say can you "C"...adding "C".. stood for Cocaine...and the song went absurdly and hysterically on and on.

We laughed, we cried.

Janis Joplin's rendition of Leaving on a Jet Plane is incredible.

I'm thinking: Where has all the "music" gone....

Indeed...

Indeeed, grasshopper. What memories.

I also have vidid memories of Joan Baez'z version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" sung in German. "Sagt mir wo die Blumen sind..." I don't remember the occasion why she sang it in German. But I remember her pronunciation was pretty dang good.

OneT - I can relate on the draft issue, although I wasn't on the female side of things... I was too old to have a lottery number... hurt myself playing soccer while in college, couldn't walk, had to leave school, wound up 1A... sheesh! There was no lottery then. You were either 2S or 1A. 1A meant line up for the shots...

After I got on the mend but before I was back in school, first thing I did after being released by the doc was to be pallbearer for an essentially empty military coffin. Schoolmate of mine had volunteered, was in a hole with a buddy during Tet Offensive, they took direct mortar hit in their hole. Not much to bury...

My first trip to The Wall in DC was quite emotional.

But enough. Happy Friday!
