RCN reports county commission caught off guard by Sheriff's request for more jail staff....

It figures county commission failed to figure in payroll when figurin' out new jail costs.

There must not have been any photographers around at budget cipherin' time.

While you can't count on county commission "leadership" for heavy lifting (like making an operating budget), come ribbon cuttin' time you can bet your prize mule there'll be plenty of "leadership" mugging for the cameras!

Yet when the piper whistles-up his tune, guess who'll be left holding the bag at tax time.

On the bright side when we cough-up our hard earned green backs for the tax increase that's surely to come, we can all feel warm and fuzzy knowing that our fearless leader has a scrap book that's second to none (exceptin' maybe former L.I.C. Ken Yager's).

Given the short-sightedness

Given the short-sightedness by this and previous county commissions/mayors over the jail issue are you really surprised? I mean I know it is logical to assume that building a facility with nearly 300% more capacity than the old jail might require some additional staffing but logic and the county commission don't really seem to go together. I've even heard that the county mayor (or is it executive again) has shot down recent revenue generating ideas for the old jail because he has already made political promises for the building. We need to be looking into innovative revenue generating for the county and quit playing politics as usual.

Roane County has operated their jail like it is 1970 for so long now that we are going to have to play catch-up for a while. I understand that it isn't popular to have to spend money but the CC and county mayor have to be able to see into the future (and not just to their next election cycle). We elect them to make tough decisions and as long as those decisions are made for the right reasons and explained properly I think we the people will understand doing what needs to be done. Former commissions passed the buck and we are having to pay for their irresponsibility now and it stinks. Let's not create the same problems for others down the road.
