Ok, I wasn't there so I'm depending the quotes being accurate. Correct them if you heard differently:
From the Roane County News:
First from the nepotism candidate:
“I definitely feel like it should have been waited on,” said Johnson, whose son, Chris, is a vice principal at Cherokee Middle School and a Roane County commissioner.
I expected more from Kim Nelson than this quote:
“I really fail to understand why that was an important thing to do,” Nelson added. “I’m not really sure how that benefited our schools to do that. Had I been there, I don’t think that’s how I would have voted on that issue.”
And this is the most confused answer and yet the most honest:
“There might be some very good reasons for it, and there might not,” Jago said. “I don’t have enough information to answer that.”
So far, none of these folks have made a convincing argument that they can do a better job than the incumbents. In fact, the thought processes in view of their comments would seem to argue against them.
Let's hear from folks who were there.

Candidates:
School board candidates
I wasn't there either, I have already voted. I only voted for one of the incumbents. It appears to me that the challengers, even though they may be inexperienced, seem to echo some of the same concerns I have. That tells me I am not alone in spite of efforts to tell me that everybody is happy with the administration.
Just remember...
It is a positive sign that our community has several individuals that are ready to step up to the plate and give many hours each week to our school system.
It takes dedication and more time than most people probably think. I spend an average 5-6 hours weekly just reviewing plans, packets, speaking with parents and teachers before contacting the administration to inquire and identify solutions. That’s just the short version! On top of that, school board members have to attend mandated training throughout the year in order to do the job effectively.
While the incumbents are indeed qualified and experienced, the contenders show much heart and desire. Some of their remarks reflect only their lack of experience. My perspective would fall this way; the incumbents are past idealistic approaches and are dealing with the reality of operating a school system and balancing innovation with federal constraints. BTW, I am no fan of NCLB theory because it leaves children behind in fact. Something those inexperienced will learn and can gain over the next few years should the community want new representation.
I wish my fellow BOE members and the interested candidates the best of luck as this general election season nears the end. This has been a clean and positive race and reflects the good character of all the candidates.
Friday's School Board Story in Roane County News
The "quotes" from the front page story in Friday's Roane County News "McGriff focus" were not obtained from the candidates during the Thursday Night's School Board Candidate Forum at Southwest Field. This story is apparently Part 2 of the July 11 Story "Six Run for Three Seats". I believe all the "quotes" were obtained during interviews prior to the printing of the July 11 Story.
I want to thank the Optimist Club for hosting the forum, and all who attended. It was a good opportunity for voters to compare candidates side by side. I am hopeful that we will continue to improve our schools. I want to take this opportunity to ask for your vote on Thursday. It has been my honor to serve on our School Board for the past year and half. If anyone has questions or concerns contact me. danhollo@aol.com
