This is highly unlikely to pass the GOP controlled Congress since they are happy to keep power as a minority party regardless of what the majority of American voters want, but it's a good try.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen thinks it’s time to do away with the electoral college.

The Memphis Democrat filed a constitutional amendment Thursday that calls for eliminating the electoral college and allowing for direct election of the president and vice president.

The congressman’s amendment comes as Democrat Hillary Clinton’s lead in the popular vote in last month’s presidential election topped 2.5 million. Clinton lost the electoral college – and the presidency – to Republican Donald Trump.

Sorry, but this was WISELY set up for this to NOT be determined by simple 50% plus one vote elections.

Steve Cohen is smarter than that, or at least I always thought him to be.

The republic needs the Electoral College. The EC does need some tuning, but we absolutely NEED it to stay around!

The electoral college was set up to get small states to ratify the Constitution. It would up protecting slavery and now gives us a President Elect who the majority of voters rejected.
