Steve Kelley is a good man and a rather intelligent and thoughtful person. He is unopposed in his commission race but I wish I could vote for him. I would gladly swap him for some of the choices I see on my ballot. Kelly was the lone vote against placing "In God We Trust" plaques on the County Courthouse. Interestingly, other than Commissioner Ellis (whose motion it was) every single one of the commissioners I spoke to in private was against the idea. Not a single one of them had the courage to vote how they really thought, it appears.
Why is that? Perhaps this quote from the Roane County News holds the clue:
He has had calls of support from people praising his courage for trying to keep government and religion separate.
Some told him they wanted to speak up, but feared retaliation against their families.
I wonder why they would fear retaliation from "Christians"?
