'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

God Bless America

So who gets to define

So who gets to define "American" Gene? Did you remember that Hispanics were here before the English? Frankly I think it's irresponsible of school officials not to have a Spanish language program in place for all students in elementary school. Multi-linguistic knowledge is a boon to education.

Look, I understand the frustration with immigration but ten foot fences and pretense stops aren't the answer. All that does is create a thug image for officers and a market for 11 foot ladders. Instead, why not go after the employers who lure these people over the border? It's time for an encrypted driver's license requirement for all states and a solid database of work permits for nor residents. Reactionary solutions rarely solve anything except inflame dog-whistle politics.

Encryted licenses won't mean

Encryted licenses won't mean a thing to the illegal immigrants who drive without one; you know, the same ones who have no car insurance. And let's not forget the ones who get free medical attention because they don't have medical insurance either.
The "employers" you speak of who actually work these illegals are just a drop in the bucket to the numbers who come here. One works and supports and 8 or 10 illegals who live in the same home, supported by him.

I say... Come in to our country LEGALLY, accept and abide by our laws and regulations and we will welcome you. If you come illegally, you are a criminal!

Patriotism re whitescreek

Whites Creek, what I posted at the top is what Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907 were. My personal belief is similar to his though, I believe if you want to become a legal citizen of any country you should pledge an allegiance to that country, it's flag, it's language and it's laws. I do not believe there is a white America and a black America nor Asian, Hispanic, Muslim etc. These are all divisive words though they describe all Americans. I believe there are some that would love to divide this country with racial bias or any bias for that matter. I myself am Scotch Irish but I do not have an allegiance to Scotland or Ireland. I like you also believe that learning other languages is beneficial and should be taught in schools. If a house divided against itself cannot stand, how can a country? I would also ask how demanding loyalty from anyone wanting to be an American citizen is reactionary or inflammatory? I believe President Theodore Roosevelt defined American in 1907 in the post I pasted so I will just stick with his definition. I have to ask myself why anyone would choose to leave a country and become a citizen of another country and try to change that country into the one they chose to leave.

God Bless America

Patriotism and Allegiance

The Oath of Allegiance currently taken by all immigrants is shown below.

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God

What more allegiance are you looking for? Your brand of "patriotism" could easily be different from mine, as well as culture or language. That does not make either one of us more or less American.

Different Patriotism????

How could we brand patriotism differently? It is simply placing your allegiance to this country before any other country. That allegiance includes to obey the laws of this great nation and defend her against enemies abroad and at home. So how is your patriotism different from mine?

God Bless America

We are not a true melting pot

And that is the choice of many "Americans". WASPS included. I do agree that we should have a national language....for communications purposes if for no other reason. Secondary Spanish instruction makes sense by virtue of the huge percentage of hispanics that have come here legally. We are and will continue to be a multi cultural society and it is unfair to ask any group to abandon their language or cultural heritage to become an "American". On the other hand, if a particular group advocates the overthrow of the government, demands a National religion or wants to rid the country of another group, that group becomes a threat to our stability and must be stopped by whatever means necessary. The terms of being an American were not set forth by Roosevelt. He may have had his preferences, but those were different times.

A tremendous amount of todays intolerance of other races is born out of fear and lack of knowledge of other cultures. There are bigots, bullies and haters on all sides that should not be construed as typical of their particular culture.

If more people would take the time to step outside of their own world and learn about their "foreign" neighbors we would all be better off.

If you quote Teddy, you attribute Teddy.

Putting single quotes around a quote doesn't really satisfy our obligation to attribute. But then I knew it was a Teddy quote, Gene. I'm a huge fan of his. He had the good sense to leave the Republican Party and found the Progressive Party. Here's a link to the Progressive party Platform of 1912. With a few mods it almost fits today's Progressives.

"To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day."

Here's another quote: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" Samuel Johnson said that in the 18th century.

Touche' Whites Creek

I love to talk about what matters and listen to the input of each individual. "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" Samuel Johnson said that in the 18th century. Spoken like a true scoundrel, the patriots I am aware of are those that shed their blood and risked their life to make this country what it is. I have no doubt that a scoundrel would wrap himself in any cloak to hide his true colors. I have been called many things so scoundrel can go in my cabinet along with the rest (laughing). Let me also be the first to say I am not happy with the Republican party and I was a registered democrat for years. Since the Tea party is not a real party yet I will have to linger in limbo for a bit longer.I would love to find a candidate that would first of all talk straight so that there was no hidden meaning in his or her words. Honesty would be a real virtue in a candidate, and the true desire to listen to the people they represent. That is what I have tried to do in these blogs, just let you see who Gene McClure is. Some may think me a scoundrel or devil but whatever handle I am ladeled with, lets at least know that you will not have to guess what I am saying and you will always know which direction I am heading.

God Bless America

Gene, I wasn't labeling you

Gene, I wasn't labeling you or anyone else but merely quoting Sam Johnson. What I'm trying to get candidates to do is get away from label politics and give us some idea of the policies, actions, and initiatives they would push. For too many of our local officials, it is about being re-elected in a popularity contest. If a candidate wants my support they have to share the vision of what they will work to make Roane County be in the next 4 years.

Will a candidate say they "support our schools" or will they commit to voting to spend the money it will take to have excellent public schools instead of diverting our tax money into an industrial park in a foreign county with no hope of a return on our investment?

Will a candidate commit to a five year plan and budget projection on any capital expenditure instead of a reactionary vote to spend millions on a Taj MaJail without even making a cursory projection of the cost of running the danged thing?

My problem with our current crop of candidates is that there is not a single one of them who can paint me a picture of Roane County's future. Instead I hear reactionary and meaningless drivel, or worse, transparent justfications for the bungling of the last four years and promises of more of the same.

Show us your vision!

Re Whites Creek

Well let me see if I can't give some meat for what I am running for. I am tired of elected officials that talk for 10 minutes and say nothing. I intend to be direct and hopefully short winded. I, like you have been opposed to much of our industrial growth because other than a few jobs and little tax we get nothing. Now let me tell you why we are not filling our industrial park with business. Roane County does not currently have an Industrial Pre-treatment program and without this most commercial and industrial customers are going to shy away from locating here because there is no rate structure nor guideline that industrial users have to comply with. One of the most crucial tools we have to recruit industry is our ability to handle their waste. The crucial key is having a set guideline that all commercial & industrial customers must abide to. The lack of this tool results in a significant unknown relating to EPA and TDEC rules and regulations. It leaves to many important questions unanswered i.e. what is the fee structure, acceptable strength of waste, penalties for exceeding, minimum and maximum flow capabilities and many other factors. These factors are generally major cost factors that are reoccurring and are big budget items for any business locating here. The lack of the PTP in actuality means that a business currently located here could possibly be placed in under such a major cost burden due to its waste that it would have to re-locate. I don't believe that to be the case but as you can see it is to big of a contributing factor for many industrial customers to take the chance.
Roane County is currently in the middle of having this PTP created and I have been negotiating with TDEC about limitations that our 35 year old system currently operates under. Unknown to many is the fact that the Plateau partnership at Westel is currently recruiting industrial customers that will be Roane County sewer customers and that Morgan and Cumberland County have agreed to build a new sewer plant for Roane so that we can treat these potential customers. The new plant along with the PTP will allow us to recruit industry to our own park. Having outside customers will also stabilize our sewer rates as the cost to treat sewer will be shared by those outside our current county area. I will talk more about this as I'm sure many will have questions but funding the necessary infrastructure to lure better paying jobs to Roane county will help in every area.

Below is the definition of illegal just in case some people do not know what it means:

illegal (comparative more illegal, superlative most illegal)

(law) Contrary to or forbidden by law, especially criminal law.
Not permitted by rules
Moving a pawn backward is an illegal move in chess.
(philately, of an issue printed for collectors) Totally fictitious, and often issued on behalf of a non-existent territory or country.
(of an immigrant) Being an illegal immigrant; residing in a country illegally.

Someone needs to explain that to a lot of "progressive" people in this country.

Other than trying to brand Progressives as being pro illegal immigrants, something as fictitious as the stamps you reference, I don't see the point of your post.

Progressives want solutions to real problems that actually work. You want to get rid of illegal immigrants? Go after the people who pay them the wages that, while impossible to maintain your American lifestyle on here in America, seem like riches compared to the pennies a day these people can earn in their home countries. Why don't you apply "illegal" to the vast agricultural interests, construction corporations, and others who enrich themselves on the backs of the undocumented workers that "Good" Americans are in essence paying to break the law? Why don't I hear the outrage and a call for addressing the rat problem at the cheese end? I think it's because the real rats are the big ones who are putting out the bait.

If you support cheaper consumer goods, construction prices, and tomatoes, then you might be one of the big rats too. Fences and feel good laws that assault our freedoms are simply window dressing on a national disease.

Thank you!

I was just clarifying illegal. Since you don't seem to know the meaning of the word. Yes, they should go after the lawbreaing citizens that are employing ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! At least if the lawbreaking citizens are caught they will maybe get fined, the ILLEGAL aliens (the are not immigrants as immigrants came into this country legally!)they are not fined, not slapped on the wrist, not deported, but give more free handouts from the government! I was told by a motel owner, who turned in ILLEGAL's to the ICE and they were told that unless there were 15 or more that they wouldn't do anything about it! Progressives don't want real solutions, they want free handouts to all the lazy bums who won't work! They want to take from the rich (people that are paying taxes) and give the money to educate the poor illegal hispanic children, whose parents won't even take the initive to learn it themselves. They want to spend our hard earned dollars to keep the few illegal criminals they bother to catch in already overpopulated populated prison cells. Yes Mr. Whitescreek you can sprew all your love for the illegals. You can sprew your hate for the people that are hiring them. I am not condoning these people either. But at least they are legal citizens! What would you do if these people came and tore down your barrier to your beautiful area, which you have blocked off from people who have lived and enjoyed it for years. I was one of those people in the past who had fond memories of the place, that you deemed to keep private and all to yourself, which is ia am sure not what the former owners of the place even had a clue that you would want to keep this wooded area all to your selfish self. Yes, in that neck of the woods you are as hated as the illegals you seem to love. How does it feel? Yes, they sprew hate for you just as you do for everyone who doesn't agree with you.

Progressive = Democrats

I can see that the post here have taken a personal turn. But lets look at some of the points dealing with illegals. One says stop them from crossing the borders another says go after the people that hire them. If they couldn't get across the borders then wouldn't that keep them from being hired? I also believe that the businesses need to be fined and the illegals extradited to whatever country they came from

God Bless America

Actually Gene,

Progressive does not equal Democrats nearly as often as it should. Just curious though, how many troops would you suggest we put along the border in order to stop every Mexican that is trying to escape a poverty few Americans can understand from getting across?
What we have a lack of in this country is not so much patriotism, it is a near absence of introspection, and and understanding of how our laws and policies just make these problems worse. We exploit these people for cheap labor so we can enjoy cheap stuff, make immigration a gauntlet, and blame them for seeking a better life. Excusing our attitudes by blaming the "criminal element" and "those lazy freeloaders" while closing our eyes to the vast majority who are feeding us, and making our clothing. This kind of talk was going on around the turn of the century when my ancestors made their way into New York Harbor.
It's pretty sick and sad that we have not learned to be both more humane and smarter in the past hundred plus years.
Will turning our border with Mexico into a near war zone solve the problem?
I don't believe it.

Actually RE

I would suggest we send as many troops as needed to secure our borders. I understand they live in poverty and they are seeking a better life and I am not without feelings toward their plight. The fact remains that they are breaking our laws to enter our country and the last time I checked you can enter this country legally. I would ask what is the consequences of entering Mexico illegally?
# Under Article 123 of the General Population Act, illegal immigration is an offense punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of up to 5,000 pesos, or about $450. Typically, any crime with a punishment of a year or more is considered a felony.

# Article 118 of the act says foreigners who are deported and then later attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be punished with up to 10 years in prison.

# Under Article 73, local police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities when asked to help enforce the nation's immigration laws.

# As set forth in several articles of the act, immigrants are admitted into Mexico according to their potential to "contribute to the national progress" and must have the income needed to support themselves.

# Article 9 of the constitution says only citizens may assemble to "take part in the political affairs of the country." Under Article 33, noncitizens "may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country."

There are many countries like Mexico that have a substandard way of life compared to Americans, are you implying that we just open our borders to any that are trying to improve their life? If that is the case why even have borders?

If I own a ship that's leaking water, do I go after the rooms filled with water or do I plug the hole and then pump the water out? If I use your logic I go after the rooms because if there were no rooms their would be no water. I say secure the border, remove the illegals, fine the business that hires them and then work with the ones that want to come here legally. But as you can see from my post that Americans trying to cross into Mexico illegally are not treated nearly so kind as the Hispanics are treated by America.

By the way, what stamps are you ranting about? You don't have to ban me from this site, I am sick of your know it all attitude about how you know everything, trust me sir, you don't know everything and needless to say never will with your single vision and unwillingness to listen to anything but your own voice! I am banning myself!

Before you get the chance!

Thanks so much. I am offended by your sweeping judgments and generalizations of people and groups you do not know. Your charges are baseless. Your bitterness seems boundless. Dump the vicious emotional baggage and educate yourself. Open your ears and your mind. It's never to late to learn.

Well, Pat...You wrote:

And then you wrote:

By the way, what stamps are you ranting about?

Philately is the study of stamps and related items.

As for the personal attack on my actions to protect my personal property, well, it's the right of a property owner to make the rules in his yard. As several denizens of RoaneViews will attest, my family welcomes those who respect the land and the creek but it simply isn't public property. There are over a dozen other land owners in the three counties nearby who have joined the effort to restore and protect Whites Creek. We are the only ones who have consistently shared our lands with folks who agree to follow the "Leave No Trace" ethic. You and I have had personal exchanges regarding this and I had hoped that you would understand.
