Sex, Poetry & RacquetballSubmitted by farmer leaf on June 12, 2009 - 12:49am.
Sorry, the sex part was just to get your attention. However, I do want to discuss the occasional remarks disparaging poetry that are worked into various people's posts. Different personalities pose their ideas in different ways. When people come to RoaneViews, some come to share ideas in poetic fashion, others come to play racquetball. Among the racquetball only group, there seems to be a dismissive attitude about "silly poems," and a sense of frustration that they don't understand what it is that is being said. To understand poetry, it requires that one be still and listen. Poetry has the ability to explore profound universal truths, but not to those in a hurry. Bob Dylan is a poet, and one who would call his profound poetry "silly," could be view as rather shallow and willfully ignorant. Racquetball on the other hand is a totally competitive undertaking, shout, yell, shout, yell, work up a sweat, gloat in victory, stomp off when defeated. It is a poor model for dialogue. I for one would like to read more poetry and watch less racquetball on this site. Thank-you.

Some have asked, and not in jest,
Are we cursed, or are we blessed?
The answer is plain if we could see,
The paradigm at play in Roane County.
We place ourselves at the center of life,
Fighting with nature in perpetual strife.
We want our comforts, no matter the cost,
And burn through resources, until all is lost.
We're taught to fear the peaceful stranger,
In case his ideas might signal some danger.
Our paranoid world view might be outdated,
But having an open mind is kept underrated.
We live in a land of milk and honey.
But all we think about is making money.
How can we expect not to be cursed,
When we surrender the best for the worst?

Leaf,
You wrote, "I for one would like to read more poetry and watch less racquetball on this site."
Thank you. You are not alone. I frequent this site despite the racquetball, not because of it. I know some others--more than I see posting here--who stay away because of the racquetball.
This site could be so much more than it is now.

I like poetic racquetball. It's a process.
and poetic racquetball (spelled with a C) is something we could live with as long as you're the one blowing the whistle when the poets get pushed off the court.

So far, no poets has been pushed off the court, though some trash talk has occurred. Some of the ballers have been sent to the showers as a last resort, however.
concerning the word "pushed." How about intimidated from the court?
Again, all I requested is that we "embrace" other ways of sharing ideas besides just straight-up racquetball.

You can write like this at 1AM? Truly, your place must be a little Eden.
amid the bees, chickens, and plants can free the mind to soar. A quiet mind and a peaceful heart can create Eden from within.
And yes, our farm is, energetically speaking, a wonderful haven for having an attitude of gratitude.

Leaf, I guess we all come here for many different reasons. I come here for information concerning Roane County that can't be found easily anywhere else. The information found here is usually about something that affects the Daily lives of Roane County residents. It is information that I can respond to and ask for more details.
When people share their ideas and information here in a poetic format I sometimes find it confusing when trying to follow their line of thought. I find it to be very hard to respond to poems without having misunderstandings about what was said.
To sum it up, I feel the racquetball format is a better format for sharing information and ideas. I if you just want to say something that does not need a response the poetic format if fine. I don't think poems are silly but I do feel that sometimes they are out of place here depending on their content.
that with a little thought and introspection, an intelligent person like yourself could manage to respond to the above poem. It is chock full of provocative statements that attempt to answer repeated questions posted here about why life in Roane County seems to be hitting a series of speed bumps.
RC is not insulated or isolated from the rest of the world. It isn't just the local events that matter to us, but more our response to regional, national and even world events that are sweeping us along.
I suggest viewing the movie "Dead Poets Society" starring Robin Williams, to help you understand the difference between feeling and sharing opinions. And most of all, I urge you not to dismiss something just because you don't understand what is being expressed. That is precisely why RC (and E. TN in general) is so behind the learning curve on so many important issues.

Your points are well taken. I have no problem with poetry. It just seems a bit cumbersome to me as a means of sharing current information. It is fine for sharing deep thoughts or if you want to convey a message that has a hidden meaning. Again, I don't think is silly but maybe little out of place here as a form of communication between members. Just my 2¢.
It adds a bit of spice to some rather droll subjects. I particularly appreciated LOC's early entries. Argument and opinion are not always a good source of information.
