McDonald's denies Hero Worker's Comp, shot while protecting customers from gunman

I don't eat at McDonald's very often. This is just one more reason why:

According to newspaper accounts and Haskett's lawyer, Philip M. Wilson, Haskett was working at the McDonald's at 10201 Rodney Parham Road last August when he interceded to stop a man who was beating a woman in the restaurant. The assailant, later identified as Perry Kennon, went outside. Haskett also stepped outside and stood at the door to keep Kennon from re-entering the restaurant. Kennon retrieved a gun from his car and shot Haskett – “multiple times,” according to Wilson. Haskett, now 22, underwent three abdominal surgeries and still carries part of a bullet in his back, according to Wilson. Haskett's medical bills exceed $300,000, Wilson said.

...Haskett filed a claim with the state Workers Compensation Commission. Misty Thompson, a claims specialist with McDonald's insurer, Ramsey, Krug, Farrell and Lensing, said in a letter to the Commission that “we have denied this claim in its entirety as it is our opinion that Mr. Haskett's injuries did not arise out of or within the course and scope of his employment.”

The Judge and the Court Recorder started a fund for the hero, Nigel Haskett.

Brings up one of my favorite cynical quotes attributed to playwright Oscar Wilde, "No good deed goes unpunished". Wonder if they are self insured as is the evil empire Walmart. McDonald's insurance company sounds like a law firm. I hope Haskett wins his case with the board. On top of that the young man looks like he has served his country in some capacity.

Just another example of how corporate America invites union organization and action by proving that they DO NOT have their workers best interests at heart.

It also gives me another good reason to stay away besides that sick feeling you get about a half hour after eating those two thousand calories.

What were they thinking here?

One has to wonder if the Big Mac is stupid or just brain dead.

Just a little incongruous...

Ronald McDonald's smiling clown face next to this disturbing story. I could say something about coulrophobia, but I don't want to appear insensitive to folks who suffer from that disorder.

I haven't noticed lately

I haven't noticed lately but a few years ago some of the Mc Donald's were on the "safe place" list .There were little stickers of a mom and kids on the window of establishments and if you were in an abusive relationship and you saw the emblems you were supposed to be hid and protected until the law got there. I wonder if,why and when that changed.

Safe Place

According to the SafePlace web site, McDonald's is still a partner.
