Drinking water?Submitted by WhitesCreek on December 30, 2008 - 7:55pm.
As of late this afternoon, the only people still on the spring supplied water were three houses. The utility injects chlorine into the spring water, and the homes are high enough and far enough away from the spill to be safely supplied for drinking water. I've been told that these folks have been contacted and understand the situation. The other affected homes on the highway 70 side of the spill are now on Roane Central water instead of the spring supplied water. There are questions about which homes on Swan Pond Circle are affected. People who have questions and want to get their well water tested can call the TVA office at 717-4006. The EPA has a mobile test lab on site and sends samples off to another lab for verification. The Roane County Joint Communication Center has a map of the affected areas and we've asked for a digital file so we can post it.

The spring line was actually cut completely off last week and hooked up to Roane Central last week and at that point was injected with chlorine to kill any contamination that may still be in the lines. So the spring line that runs from the spill was capped off last week no one is on the spring water anymore. Once the spring people were shut off from the spring Roane Central hooked up on the other end. The problem is that the people on the spring were on old galvanized pipes from the fifties that were never pressurized and have run on gravity flow for many many years. And from what CR Barger and sons have told me when it became pressurized it leaked like a sieve! Barger has worked to put in several taps and lines since the spill at record speed! And this has all been at the expense of the TVA! These resident on the 70 side of Swan Pond will be serviced by Roane Central from now on the City of Kingston gave their rights up to service this area a few months ago. And Roane Central was actually in the process last week of running new lines to everyone. This spill has just put everything in warp speed. I have been fighting for the past 7 years to acquire pressurized water for these people. Up until this week you had 7+ people that had no water at all for the past 5 years but well water that was not dependable. Now the city of Kingston has no water customers on Swan Pond at all. Don't mean to step on your feet here Whites Creek but I got a few years of History with Swan Pond Water. There are a few people that don't have the new line run to their home that will be complete by tomorrow.
If you have good info let's have it.
I'm trying to remember all of what I was told by a TVA guy, who was trying to remember all he was told. The important fact is that there are only three homes on the gravity feed on the Hwy 70 side and they are high enough up that they are considered safe to drink.
