Whites Creek is Closed for MaintenenceSubmitted by WhitesCreek on July 11, 2008 - 8:03pm.
Well not really, but almost. A team of biologists and friends of biologists will be conducting a stream survey along several miles of Whites Creek Saturday, July 12. This is all private land but is usually open to hikers and swimmers through the grace of the several land owners who are willing to share Nature's beauty, just not this one day. The Creek is closed in order for these folks to do their work efficiently. There are several rare, threatened, and endangered species of various sorts living in and around Whites Creek. We'll have underwater cameras and other cameras and will try to document everything and report back on what these folks find. There's a good possibility that Whites Creek will be found to be a good place to re-introduce the "Spot finned chub", a beautiful little fish that has been found in the creek, but that may have been eradicated by sediment problems in the past.

We will have a species report later on but we saw tons of stuff. The eagles were chirping away and called to their babies as we snorkeled below their nest.
We saw blue grosbeaks and scarlett tanagers, and listened to Copes tree frogs and green frogs.
The first Diana Fritillary butterfly female of the year showed up while we were having our pre-creek beverage. It is the first time I've seen male and female Diana's at the same time. Wow!
As for the fish we were after, the spot finned chub, no sightings were to be had. I thought we had found one for sure but it wasn't to be. I was fooled by a white tail shiner male. I'll post pictures later so you can see what I mean.
Anyway, we had a great crowd of scientist dignitaries and they had a great time.
The only downer was the soft shelled turtle that someone had shot. It was huge...10-12 inches acroos the shell, but with a bullet wound in its neck.
What an amazing creature! And some moron shot it.
We watched it swim around us. Its webbed feet flaring out as it swam between my legs. It bumped into my foot and I jumped out of the way and watched it swim away. It's neck swollen where it had been shot, the head twisted grotesquely to one side by the wound. What creep woud do this? Certainly not anybody who deserves to experience the creek.
We watched it swim away, hoping it wasn't in too much pain.
Hoping it coud survive.
