Off Road Vehicles and Environmetal Destruction

Consider this a plea to ORV riders to behave and obey the law, particularly with respect to private land.

The Southern Environmental Law Center has taken the lead in trying to force Federal and State agencies to enforce the law regarding ORV's in Tennessee, and mitigate the damage to our streams and rivers that result from ORV use in our public forests.

Roane County has a serious problem with ORV damage as well. In talking with TWRA rangers and the managers of Mt. Roosevelt State Forest, they all say ORV use has resulted in significant environmental damage. The problem is one of funding for education as well as enforcement and Tennessee is falling well short in both departments, especially with only two rangers for Catoosa, Mt. Roosevelt, AND Watts Bar Lake.

I think it's two for Roane County (Catoosa is not in Roane), but still, I agree we could use more.

You may be correct

But I see Mt. Roosevelt listed as being part of Cattoosa in some cases, though I have been recently told that it is its own management area now.

The other problem is that I have been told that there will soon be personel reductions due to Tennessee's budget situation. This is not good.

Killjoy

I can't but help to read your posts. You've got a million of them. I love that you're interested in Roane County, but man, come on. Let some people have their fun where they can. If not in a state or federal park they'll be in your front yard or in the neighbor's field. Don't be a killjoy. Worry about something controllable like CO2 emissions or something.

Think about what you said, K

Let me rephrase...

"If we don't let them destroy a state forest, they'll destroy your yard."

Well, unfortunately ORV's are doing both right now.

Some activities look like good clean fun until so many people are doing them that the land can't recover. ORV's are one of these and it's up to the riders to figure out how to have their fun without destroying resources that belong to everyone, not just them. It's all a balance but it's way out of whack right now.
