Rockwood is 19% underwater, about 1 mortgage in 5; Harriman is 18%, Kingston less. Overall Roane County is 14% underwater, about 1 in 7. This is very worrisome but some other locales--Knoxville, Crab Orchard, much of Georgia--are much worse.

"In April, companies hired 165,000 more workers, but they cut everyone’s hours (on average) by 12 minutes. That doesn’t sound like much of a decline, but spread out over the 135 million-strong work force, the decline in hours worked is the equivalent of firing more than 500,000 workers while keeping hours steady."

When it comes to long-term economic development, there’s ample evidence to suggest that counties where drilling occurs will be in worse shape down the road, and that even during the drilling and producing phases, there will be a few winners and likely a whole lot of losers, especially among lower-income individuals.

An old friend, June Hensley of Kingston, just died at 86. I knew her through the Southwest Point Chapter of the D.A.R., for whom she volunteered tirelessly. She had a kind heart and always gave freely of her time; she truly cared about veterans, students, and our whole community. She will be greatly missed.

Sunday night, volunteers from the West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department saved my aged mother. She had gone outside to the porch to feed the cat, then fell down and hit her head and couldn't get up.

The volunteers arrived within a few minutes, got her to her feet, and offered medical assistance. We could not have imagined a faster response.

I want to give a big thank you to the amazing, wonderful, and selfless men and women who volunteer fire and emergency services here in West Roane!
