Updated: There are only 18 15 days left to the DonorsChoose.org funding request of a class of Raymond S. Bower elementary school students. They are hoping for math-themed books to read, graph paper, and other math-related supplies.

The students have raised most of the funds needed but are still $184.89 $174.89 from their goal.

Please, won't you consider giving at least a little? We can let these would-be readers and math students know we care: Link....

It has been 42 years since Title IX, which promotes "gender equality in education," became law. This was too late for me, so I was never allowed to take wood or metal or auto shop in high school. School administrators said having a girl in shop class "would be a disruptive influence."

I really wanted to take shop and their rejection still stings. You can probably guess that today I'm a big fan of Title IX.

The annual yard 'sale' of the West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department is today round the clock all night until tomorrow at 2 PM. Go to Station #1 on Pumphouse Road near Rockwood for community fun and lots of bargains.

One of the many bargains available is a high-quality cotton light blue shirt with gorgeous hand-painted flowers. This is in perfect condition. See a slide show about it.

Chief Charlie Redwine of West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department (WRCVFD) is pleased to announce the results from the Insurance Services Office, Inc., (ISO) 11/2013 inspection:

WRCVFD's classification has improved from a 6/9 to a class 5/8b. I would like to thank those who worked so hard in getting our department ready for this inspection. As with any fire department and community it is a big deal for us. Hats off to those who assisted. A copy of the Score Summary is available for review at Station One.

Rockwood 1st graders have been raising funds to get a writing center and individual storage sacks. Last year another 1st grade class at the same school got these, with great success. Ridge View first graders in Roane County have been trying to raise money to get software to help them with phonics and reading. Thanks to very generous donors and the kind help of folks on RoaneViews, they've raised all of what they need (Link...).
