There are only 10 days left to the DonorsChoose.org funding request of a class of first-graders at Ridge View Elementary in Rockwood. They are hoping for educational software to help them learn phonics and math concepts.

They have already raised most of their $517.64 goal and have $117.34 to go. Please, won't you consider giving at least a little? Let these little would-be scholars know you care: Link...

Chief Charlie Redwine of West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department (WRCVFD) is pleased to announce the results from the Insurance Services Office, Inc., (ISO) 11/2013 inspection:

WRCVFD's classification has improved from a 6/9 to a class 5/8b. I would like to thank those who worked so hard in getting our department ready for this inspection. As with any fire department and community it is a big deal for us. Hats off to those who assisted. A copy of the Score Summary is available for review at Station One.

Sixty 4th-grade students in Midtown Elementary are hoping for 5 microscopes to use in science classes. They have a project at DonorsChoose.org, but there are only 18 days before the request times out, and there is $900.24 remaining to be raised.

Rockwood 1st graders have been raising funds to get a writing center and individual storage sacks. Last year another 1st grade class at the same school got these, with great success. Ridge View first graders in Roane County have been trying to raise money to get software to help them with phonics and reading. Thanks to very generous donors and the kind help of folks on RoaneViews, they've raised all of what they need (Link...).

According to a recent report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, Tennessee's poorest 20% pay 11.2% of their income in state and local taxes. In contrast, the top 1% in Tennessee pay just 2.8% of their income for state and local taxes. Thirty-five states are better.

1. Tennessee
-- Violent crimes per 100,000: 643.6
-- Poverty rate: 17.9%
-- Pct. of population with bachelor’s degree or higher: 24.3%
-- Property crimes per 100,000: 3,371.4 (10th highest)

Tennessee has the dubious distinction of having the worst violent crime rate in the country.
